It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better.
–Sir Francis Drake
I know it’s been a while since our last update. The truth is there’s not much to report.
Plans Change
There is an old quote, “A sailor’s plans are written in the sand at low tide.” Meaning, they change very often.
Boats all around the lower Chesapeake Bay are staging to head south to the Bahamas or Caribbean after 1 November. They are provisioning, doing last minute projects, etc.
Our original plan was to sail south to the Bahamas as soon as Hurricane season ends November 1st. That is definitely out the window now. Best guess is maybe late December depending on how my physical therapy goes. I had to have surgery for my ruptured achilles tendon, and am just now getting into physical therapy. I’m in a walking boot for the next seven weeks at least. We may be leaving here in January or February. It’s going to be really cold here in Virginia. If we have to wait that long we may go directly to the Caribbean. It will be weather dependent at that point.
Dinghy Chaps
Nancy has been diligently working on chaps or covers for our dinghy. The top enemy to hypalon, which is what our dinghy is constructed of, is sunshine. The UV rays degrade it over time. That plus dragging scuba tanks and provisions over the side abrade the material, so having the dinghy chaps will help it last a long time. It’s a huge project.
Dock Life
Dock life is pretty boring. Don’t get me wrong, it’s way better than going to work every day, but we would much rather be out sailing and adventuring. Our most excitement was seeing a dolphin in the marina.
Hurricanes
July through November is hurricane season in the Atlantic basin, and we’ve had a couple of close calls in the last two months. We saw 70 knots of wind a couple of times. Thank God our marina is in a proven hurricane hole.
That’s it for now. Hopefully we’ll be sailing out of here sooner rather than later.
